Mudskipper

Amphibious fish that skip, climb, and breathe on land.

Mudskippers are a group of 25 species of amphibious fish belonging to the goby subfamily Oxudercinae. They stand out for their odd body shapes, a fondness for living partly in water and partly on mud, clumsy land movement, and the capacity to endure long stretches both submerged and out of water. They inhabit tropical, subtropical, and temperate zones, from the Indo-Pacific region to the Atlantic coast of Africa.

These fish can reach up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) in length, and most are a brownish green that varies from dark to light. During breeding season, males develop bright spots in red, green, or blue to attract females. Unlike typical fish, mudskippers have eyes that stick out from the top of their flat heads. Their side pectoral fins are positioned farther forward and underneath their elongated bodies; these fins are jointed and work like limbs, letting the fish crawl. Although they share the basic body plan of other gobies, these pectoral fins allow mudskippers to actively “skip” across mud (hence their common name) and even climb low-hanging branches and scrub. They can leap up to 61 centimeters (24 inches) by bending their bodies sideways and pushing off with their tails.

Taxonomically, Oxudercinae is sometimes placed within the family Gobiidae, but recent molecular studies suggest this is incorrect, as oxudercine gobies appear paraphyletic relative to amblyopine gobies. Instead, they are grouped in a distinct “Periophthalmus lineage” that also includes amblyopines. Mudskippers are defined as oxudercine gobies that are “fully terrestrial for some portion of the daily cycle.” This definition includes the genera *Boleophthalmus*, *Periophthalmodon*, *Periophthalmus*, and *Scartelaos*. Field observations of *Zappa confluentus* suggest this monotypic genus should also be included.

Mudskippers typically live in burrows in intertidal zones, adapting to this habitat in ways most intertidal fish do not—those fish usually hide under wet seaweed or in tide pools when the tide recedes. The burrows have smooth, vaulted ceilings.
