Paddlefish belong to the ray-finned fish family Polyodontidae, part of the ancient order Acipenseriformes, which includes only two living groups: paddlefish and sturgeons. Their most recognizable trait is a long, flattened snout (rostrum) that boosts their ability to sense electrical fields, helping them find food in cloudy water. All known paddlefish—both living and fossil—are found only in North America and Eastern Asia. Of the eight known species, six are prehistoric and known solely from fossils (five from North America and one from China). The two species that survived into modern times are the American paddlefish (*Polyodon spathula*) and the Chinese paddlefish (*Psephurus gladius*, also called the "Chinese swordfish"), which is now extinct. The oldest paddlefish fossil, *Protopsephurus*, comes from China and dates back roughly 120 million years to the Early Cretaceous.
Throughout their historical range, paddlefish numbers have dropped sharply due to overfishing, pollution, and human development. Dams have been especially harmful, blocking seasonal migrations to traditional spawning grounds. Changes to river flows have destroyed the spawning and nursery habitats crucial for their survival. **Morphology**
Paddlefish are among the few living animals that keep a notochord past the embryonic stage. Their bodies have very few bones, made mostly of cartilage, with the notochord acting as a flexible spine. Both species share a spindle-shaped body, smooth, scaleless skin, a heterocercal tail, and small, poorly developed eyes.

The Chinese paddlefish is the largest known paddlefish.
