The ricefishes are a family (Adrianichthyidae) of small ray-finned fish found in fresh and brackish waters from India to Japan and into the Malay Archipelago, most notably Sulawesi. The common name derives from some species being found in rice paddies. They are notable for their use as model organisms in developmental biology and for being the first vertebrate to mate and produce healthy young in space.

Ricefishes are believed to have been kept as aquarium fishes since the 17th century, with the Japanese ricefish (Oryzias latipes) being one of the first species kept and bred into a golden color. Most species are small, making them of interest for aquaria; Adrianichthys reach lengths of 8.5–17.1 cm, while the largest Oryzias reaches up to 8 cm, and the smallest Oryzias species are only up to 1.6 cm long. They have distinctive features including an unusual jaw structure and an additional bone in the tail.

Reproduction varies among species: most spawn eggs fertilized externally, but some, including the Japanese ricefish, fertilize eggs internally and carry them inside the body until just before hatching. Several other species carry eggs attached to the body between their pelvic fins. The Japanese ricefish, also known as the medaka, is a popular model organism in developmental biology and has traveled into space, where it became the first vertebrate to mate and produce healthy young in space.

Molecular phylogenetic studies suggest the family originated in India, and that the diversity on Sulawesi forms a single lineage. It has been suggested that species formerly classified in Xenopoecilus and Adrianichthys evolved through speciation from Oryzias. The fossil genus †Lithopoecilus from the Miocene of Sulawesi may represent a prehistoric member, but is only tentatively placed within the family.
